Problem solving has four basic steps, defining the problem, generating alternatives, evaluating and selecting alternatives, and implementing solutions. That is exactly what mathematics is. There are many skills needed in order to implement solutions. Mathematics teachers teach students facts, concepts, and skills. These facts, skills, and concepts are taught to aide in the process of problem solving.
